A Businessman from France has been jailed for 4 years today after it was discovered he was selling breast implants containing industrial silicone. Jean-Claude Mas founder and owner of Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) was convicted of aggravated fraud. As well as this a number of PIP executives and managers were also found guilty and given jail time.
PIP was responsible for a global health scare when one of their faulty implants was tested and it was discovered that they were using materials which were non-authorised and not fit for humans. It is reported that an estimated 300,000 women from 65 countries are currently using implants provided by PIP.
Mas, 74 was seen acting calm and content with himself when he was handed his sentence. Alongside his 4-year prison stay, he is also being fined €75,000 (£63,000) and has been banned from ever running a company or working within the medical industry.
The trial over the company Poly Implant Prothese took place in Marseille in the south of France with many people at the court happy with the outcome. There have been several woman who have received several thousand’s in compensation but, these have only been the French victims and not any of the British victims. The UK government has been heavily criticized for not taking any action as of yet so hopefully they will do.
